Freight price
How Much Does Freight Shipping Cost?
Build a checkable freight budget without relying on a national average that ignores lane, mode, class and service.
There is no single credible US freight-shipping average for an unspecified load. An LTL pallet and a dedicated truckload use different networks and rate bases; the defensible answer is a current lane-specific rate plus the exact minimum, fuel and accessorial terms.
What changes the result?
A useful calculation starts with the physical scope and the written commercial terms. These are the factors to make explicit:
- LTL, volume LTL or truckload mode
- Origin, destination and date
- Weight, cube, class and commodity
- Equipment and capacity
- Pickup, delivery and liability scope
Use one scope for every quote
Give each business the same information and ask it to resolve the same boundaries. That makes the totals more comparable and exposes work left as an allowance or exclusion.
- Write one complete shipment specification
- Request like-for-like current rates
- Run each offer through the same worksheet
- Verify the business and keep the confirmation
Why a national average is weak
Freight uses capacity that changes by direction, date, network and equipment. A headline price detached from the exact lane and shipment can be less useful than a transparent worksheet based on a current offer.
Choose the rate basis before doing arithmetic
LTL may use class-specific CWT rates, shipment minimums, pallet programs or spot quotes. Truckload may use per-mile, flat or all-in pricing. Do not combine the arithmetic from one basis with the terms from another.
Compare service and responsibility as well as price
Confirm who is the carrier, broker or freight forwarder, what services are included, which entity has responsibility, and what written rules govern payment, claims and cancellation.
Questions people ask
What is the average cost to ship one pallet?
There is no reliable national figure without origin, destination, packaged size and weight, class, date and services. Obtain a current lane-specific rate.
Is freight priced by weight or distance?
Both can matter, but the rate structure varies. LTL often uses weight, class and lane; truckload offers may use miles or a flat amount.
Can the calculator find a rate without a quote?
No. It calculates from the commercial rate and terms you enter.
What details should I gather before pricing freight?
Use final packaged dimensions and weight, handling-unit count, commodity and class evidence, lane, date, equipment and pickup or delivery needs.
